Hechavarria hit .258 with three homers and 26 RBIs in 61 games with Tampa Bay this season. The 29-year-old is known more for his defense than his bat; his .990 fielding percentage ranks fourth in the Majors among shortstops (minimum 200 innings) and second in the American League behind Houston’s Carlos Correa (.992). Hechavarria’s 94-game (319 total chances) errorless streak that ended on June 30 is the longest in Rays franchise history for a shortstop.

Hechavarria had played sparingly since exiting in the seventh inning on July 21 with a sore left oblique, making one start and entering as a defensive replacement three times. Tampa Bay moved on, in part, because it wanted to open up Major League reps for Willy Adames.

“Tough decision, obviously,” manager Kevin Cash said last week. “But I think [the move had to be made] in fairness to Hech, and what has taken place here. We talked about creating a little better lane for Willy when he got back up here.”

Seelinger, 23, was a 28th-round selection by the Bucs — the first player to be drafted out of Farmingdale State — in the 2017 Draft. He’s 1-3 with a 3.03 ERA and seven saves through 28 appearances with Class A West Virginia this season.
