Ireland makes top 10 of heaviest drinking countries but are we number one?

It can be quite an annoying stereotype for a lot of Irish people, but it appears that we do love an alcoholic beverage, because we’re in the top 10 of the heaviest drinking countries.

Well that’s according to the World Health Organisation who have put together a list of the countries who put away the most alcohol.

Although you’d probably expect we were number one on the list once we got into the top 10, it turns out we aren’t.

Ireland is actually ranked at number seven on the list as the report released by the WHO estimates that the average Irish person drinks as much as 13 litres of alcohol per year.

That being said, while we’re seventh, we aren’t too far behind Moldova, who took top spot.

In Moldova they drink an average of 15.2 litres of alcohol per person each year, just beating out Lithuania, whose population guzzle 15 litres each every year.

Surprisingly enough those in the Seychelles and in Nigeria, drink more alcohol on average than the Irish taking the fourth and sixth spots with average consumptions of 13.8 and 13.4 respectively.
