Manchester United are ready to battle-it-out with Liverpool and Chelsea over a deal to sign £70m-rated Borussia Dortmund attacker Christian Pulisic, according to reports.
Pulisic has developed in to one of the most exciting young talents in European football since joining Dortmund from PA Classics in 2015 but his long-term future at the club is in serious doubt as his contract is up in 2020 and he’s showing no sign of committing himself to the Westfalonstadion any time soon.
The 20-year-old’s situation has alerted a number of clubs and the Metro are citing a report from Sport Bild that claims Manchester United have now joined Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to sign Pulisic ahead of next summer.
The Metro don’t link to the German outlet and I can’t track down the original article online to verify the story but several other media outlets are also carrying the Sport Bild report so it seems United, Liverpool and Chelsea are set for a summer transfer battle.
Pulisic fuelled speculation that he could be heading to England soon after admitting last month that he wants to play in the Premier League. He’s quoted as saying by the Metro:
‘England, the Premier League, is a league where lots of kids dream of playing so there is no reason why maybe one day I won’t play here,’
It’s claimed in the report that Chelsea are hoping to get a deal agreed in January as they are concerned Eden Hazard may finally be lured to Spain but Dortmund are reluctant to let Pulisic leave mid-season.
Jurgen Klopp has been strongly linked with the American winger in recent transfer windows and Liverpool are once again being touted as potential suitors as the German coach looks to add competition for the likes of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane at Anfield.
However, United will provide stiff competition as they have the finances to compete for Pulisic’s signature with the Metro reporting that Dortmund will cash-in if £70m is put on the table next summer.
Jose Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure this season after his United bosses failed to land many of his prime targets last summer but Pulisic would be something of a coup if the Manchester giants could lure him to Old Trafford.
