Chelsea face an uphill battle to reach the Carabao Cup final after Tottenham’s 1-0 semi-final, first leg victory at Wembley on Tuesday night.
And many Blues supporters pinpointed a key moment in the game which underlined Eden Hazard’s apparent frustration with a teammate.
Harry Kane’s VAR-awarded penalty proved to be the difference between the sides on the night, with referee Michael Oliver eventually pointing to the spot for Kepa Arrizabalaga’s foul on the forward, despite it initially appearing as though Kane was offside.
There was no way back for the Blues after that despite them dominating possession for much of the second period, with Andreas Christensen stabbing an effort wide following Ross Barkley’s header.
But there was a moment in the second period that caught fans’ attentions.
As left-back Marco Alonso advanced with the ball down the wing, he was seen urging Hazard to make a run, but the Belgian didn’t.
Instead he stayed to Alonso’s right and asked for a pass, which eventually came after Alonso had moved ahead of his teammate.
So by the time Alonso passed the ball back to Hazard he was surrounded, with Son Heung-min, Davinson Sanchez and Christian Eriksen all massing around the Belgian, who had little option but to drop to the floor and win a free-kick.
Hazard is then seen getting up off the ground and gesturing towards Alonso in apparent anger, and that was enough for Blues fans to suggest that he’s lost patience with his teammate.
Twitter user @ShedLower11 said: “Not on a “Alonso is the worst LB of all time” bandwagon here, but in recent weeks it’s been pretty clear that Hazard hates playing with him.”
While @KoKs_Andre went further, adding: “Alonso gonna make hazard leave this club.”
Here are more of the fans’ reactions:
Hazard has of course been linked with Real Madrid , who are expected to move for him in the summer.
